Every child should be screened for learning disabilities during their Kindergarten to 1st grade years. Screenings are simple tests that provide early indicators of learning disabilities. They are not definitive, but they can rule out a disability. Eselin performs these screenings.
If the screening is positive for a learning disability, this is ample evidence of the need for a formal evaluation by a psychologist to define and positively diagnose the disability. Eselin will refer the student for evaluation and diagnosis.
The diagnosis of a learning disability has important implications for students’ learning because a student with a learning disability may not only require additional education services, but a diagnosis may reveal that a school does not have the specialists with proper skills to remedy the disability.
Based on the results of the screening, Eselin can perform a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. This assessment provides specific information regarding a student’s skills. The student receives a detailed report that can be used by schools or Eselin to provide appropriate assistance. This assessment becomes the baseline for either intervention or therapy plan.
When a learning disability is not indicated by screening or diagnosis, Eselin provides a thorough and continuous intervention to fill the student’s needs. Eselin provides strict progress monitoring and reports to guardians or sponsors.
Interventions are appropriate for students who have delayed learning for causes other than learning disabilities.
When a psychologist diagnoses a learning disability, Eselin will conduct a comprehensive assessment and design a plan of therapy. Therapies are required when a learning disability requires non-standard pedagogies to overcome the disability.
Therapies are appropriate when student’s have diagnosed learning disabilities. Often educational therapies coincide with other parts of the psychologist’s treatment plan.
